Learn More About the Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD)

What is biliopancreatic diversion? Is it the right type of bariatrics (weight-loss) surgery for you?

Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) has proven successful for long-term weight loss in many patients. It is essentially an operation in which part of the stomach is removed and surgeons create a significant bypass of the intestines.

On average, this operation eliminates up to 80% of your excess weight at 10 years.

Thus, while BPD is a successful and minimally invasive surgery, it is in many ways a more substantial surgery than other bariatrics options.

Risks

BPD is a substantial surgery in no small part because of the risk of complications. Specifically, because of the magnitude of the intestinal bypass, the patient is at risk for malnutrition. To counteract this effect, doctors will order many vitamin and protein supplements.

Additionally, the patient will need to undergo lifetime monitoring, which will include blood work every six months. This is due to the fact that BPD patients can be high-risk for brittle bone disease, night blindness, and liver problems.

Additional risks of BPD can include leaks, infections, bleeding, and pancreatitis in the short term. BPD can also require reoperations over the long term in order to adjust for malnutrition and/or the possibility of bowel obstruction.

In other words, to put it as plainly as possible, this is an operation that requires a clear understanding of the risks. The patient must commit to the procedure and embrace the need for compliance with both the follow-up regimen and the program of nutritional supplements, possibly including vitamin and mineral supplements.

NYMIS and Biliopancreatic Diversion

As your potential provider and wellness guide from start to finish, New York Minimally Invasive Surgery will cover this information with you in great detail. We want you to understand your options and to be comfortable with your decision to undergo biliopancreatic diversion.

When you first meet with our staff, we will begin the process of addressing your concerns and answering your questions. Every patient is different, whether it’s in body mass index (BMI) or in their specific health information and ability to engage in regular physical activity.

Therefore, at NYMIS, every program of health and wellness, particularly when it comes to how best to lose weight, will be customized according to the patient’s specific health issues and needs.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution or health system when it comes to bariatric surgery, either in general or biliopancreatic diversion specifically. While we have achieved great successes over a number of years and across a wide variety of patients, we will still take the time to get to know you and your specific situation before recommending a course of action.

To that end, we’re proud to have created an environment at New York Minimally Invasive Surgery that is welcoming, enlightening, and encouraging.

At NYMIS, you can begin to thrive and live your best life. You will collaborate with our team and with our surgeons on a course of weight-loss surgery and post-op treatment that will soon have you welcoming a new day of health and wellbeing.

New York Minimally Invasive Surgery: Understanding Our Process

As we said above, every patient is different. Therefore, everyone’s process will be a little different.

Typically, however, there are some standard steps that each patient takes in order to begin their treatment.

First, patients will sign up for an in-person seminar or take our online seminar now.

The initial stages of our process also include contacting us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Marina Kurian.

When we meet, we can discuss your insurance coverage, if any, as well as your financing options. We’ll also talk about our excellent and ongoing support for you post-op, and how we can help you stick to the lifestyle changes that will be required in order for you to reach your weight-loss, health, and wellbeing goals.

Finally, we’ll schedule your treatment or surgery!

We’re excited you’re here and that you’re interested in learning more about us. Please let us know if you have any questions.
