Revisional Bariatric Surgery New York

When I came seeking a revision, the first thing Dr. K said to me, was “I remember you” and then when I told her how much I gained back she replied “you are still beautiful”. Worried about which option I was to do, she guided me thru the process to the BOB (band over bypass). She knew my weaknesses and my strengths, and gave me the information and knowledge to make a educated decision.

When my Mom objected, Dr. K spoke to her on the phone, answering all her questions. The night before my surgery, I spoke with Dr. K on the phone and she reassured me of my decision. Today, I am 4 months out from my revision, have restriction back and down over 40lbs, and I am 16lbs away from my goal.

Learn More About Revisions

What is revisional bariatric surgery? When is revisional bariatric surgery recommended? These are important questions for a number of reasons — and for a number of people. For the answers, we turn to Dr. Marina Kurian, founder and head of New York Minimally Invasive Surgery and an experienced bariatric surgeon.

Revisional bariatric surgery, revisional weight-loss surgery, or bariatric revision surgery are all names for a procedure undergone to correct or improve upon a previous weight loss surgery.

Bariatric Surgery: NY Minimally Invasive Surgery

Obesity is a chronic disease. And for the vast majority of patients, bariatric surgery results in a successful outcome. For Dr. Kurian, this means three things at a minimum.

First, it means the patients lose weight after surgery. Second, it means the patient maintains a healthy weight for a lifetime. And finally, it means that patients no longer suffer from many of the problems that burdened their pre-weight-loss-surgery lives: high-blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, sleep apnea, and more.

However, for some patients, bariatric surgery does not result in these successful outcomes. This can happen for a variety of reasons. During consultations, Dr. Kurian may recommend revisional bariatric surgery.

Revisions are done for a number of reasons, Dr. Kurian says. There may be weight regain or a weight recurrence. Kurian may also recommend revisional bariatric surgery due to complications, such as ulcers, heartburn, and acid reflux.

Any course correction is done only after a thorough examination of the patient and a review of the problem.

“What I do is I get them back in the office,” Dr. Kurian says. “We meet with the dietitian. We determine if we can actually give them medications to help them get back on their journey or if there’s something anatomically changed with their original weight loss procedure.”

Revisional Bariatric Surgery

At NYMIS, we often see patients who have come to Dr. Kurian seeking relief after weight-loss surgery at another clinic.

“I see other patients coming in from around the country,” she says. “The goal of my practice is really to help the patient, and together we come up with what the best solution is for the problem that the patient has.”
